About 40 miles east of San Antonio, at a property in Seguin, Texas, homeowners decided to remodel their horse barn and turn it into a multipurpose area. Their plan was to convert the horse barn into a spot to hold parties, private functions, small concerts, and storage. During the remodel, when thinking about flooring ideas, they asked their general contractor to get in touch with SUNDEK of San Antonio (SOSA) about options. Not only does SOSA have a solid reputation in the area, but they had also completed several installations for the homeowner in the past at two previous properties. Happy with their work, the client wanted to see if SOSA could provide the right flooring for this project, too.

When SOSA met with the homeowners and general contractor at the property, they did a site analysis of the barn and provided multiple concrete flooring options at various price points. With the SUNDEK line of products, there are a variety of options, which gives clients the ability to choose exactly what they want at the budget they can afford.

In this case, the homeowner selected SUNDEK’s Tuscan product with the wood plank effect. This choice gives clients the look of wood for a fraction of the cost. With Tuscan, SUNDEK contractors apply a thin overlay on which they can create deep texture and design elements. Color is then applied to create the desired appearance. Clients are often surprised to learn that Tuscan can be applied over many different surface materials including concrete, brick, walls, foam, drywall, cinder block, cement board, stucco, pre-cast moldings, and more. One of the many benefits of using SUNDEK’s Tuscan effect rather than installing real wood flooring is that it is more durable and will last longer. Things like termites and damage from water aren’t an issue with concrete coatings, either.

Though the homeowners knew they wanted the wood plank effect, they were having a difficult time deciding how they wanted to lay out the pattern. It’s a big decision to make, and it’s not too uncommon for design plans to vary slightly as projects progress. SOSA prepared the surface and began to lay out the design so the homeowners could envision what it would look like. Initially, the plan was to have the planks going in two main directions with accent runners. However, when the homeowners saw this layout mocked up, they knew it wasn’t quite right for the space.

An online search sparked a new idea: a wood plank Herringbone effect. The new design would help offset the custom copper square ceiling tiles. SOSA created a sketch on site then ran it by the crew leader. Next, they got to work taping off the custom pattern. Upon seeing the new layout, the client fell in love with it. The design was perfect for the shape and size of their space.

After deciding on the new direction for the wood imprints, the SOSA crew set to work. They were challenged with an aggressive timeline, as the installation needed to be complete for an upcoming event: A Sweet 16 birthday party for twins.

The concrete coating was stamped, but to really make the floor look like wood, it still needed to be stained in the desired color. The SOSA crew created multiple samples using different colors to show the homeowners and get their final approval. After a few iterations, the homeowners decided on a custom color that required a combination of two of SUNDEK’s standard colors. SUNDEK has a wide variety of colors to choose from. Even though many clients are happy with the standard color options, SUNDEK is also happy to make custom colors. This gives our clients the ability to get the exact look they want to fit the style they’re going for.

With the color application complete, the final step was to apply a clear sealer. SUNDEK contractors are often asked if sealers are necessary, and the answer is an emphatic yes. A sealer protects the surface from general wear and tear in addition to damage from spills and abrasions. An added benefit is that it makes a surface easier to clean—an essential quality in a space such as this that’s intended for large gatherings and lots of foot traffic. SUNDEK’s quality sealer will protect the surface and keep it looking great for years to come.

Despite the design changes and the tight deadline, SOSA was able to complete the project on time so the space could be the site for the birthday event. In the end, the clients were pleased with the result: a durable, beautiful floor for future gatherings.
