What is a broom finish?

To achieve a broom finish, a contractor carefully brushes a broom over concrete before it dries. This creates a subtle texture that looks great in any setting.

What are the pros of a broom finish?

Both homeowners and commercial property owners like that with a broom finish you can get a slip-resistant and beautiful surface that’s reasonably priced. While a broom finish does provide a surface that’s more eye-catching than a plain gray concrete slab, people also like that it’s subtle and not too showy, and blends with any style.

Broom finish on existing concrete

The great thing about the broom finish technique is that it doesn’t have to only be applied when installing a new slab of concrete. If you already have a concrete surface, you can get a broom finish on that existing surface as long as it’s still viable. SUNDEK of San Antonio can apply a coating directly onto your prepared concrete slab and create the broom finish on that coating. You don’t have to tear anything out and start from scratch.

Broom finish on damaged concrete

As long as you don’t have significant cracks or other damage that’s compromising the integrity of your structure, SUNDEK of San Antonio can use our SunRestore coating on top of your existing concrete slab. First, we will address any minor imperfections such as cracking, chipping, or spalling. Next we'll apply the SunRestore coating and then create the broom finish texture. SunRestore can be used on new and existing slabs.

How to create a broom finish

Here’s a brief overview of what we do at SUNDEK of San Antonio to install a broom finish on an existing concrete surface:

  1. Clean the surface. Just like we do with any coating installation, we thoroughly clean the surface so it’s free of dirt and other debris.
  2. Prepare the surface. Using an acid etch or grinder, we prep the surface so the new coating can adhere to it.
  3. Repair the surface if needed. If the existing surface has cracks or other damage, we’ll address those issues before moving on to the next step.
  4. Prime the surface. Using a sprayer or roller, we apply the primer to the concrete surface.
  5. Coat the surface. We evenly apply SunRestore to the surface.
  6. Add texture. We run a concrete broom across the surface carefully to add the texture.
  7. Complete detail work. Next, we grind or cut out joints and add any other desired effects.
  8. Seal the surface. We apply two coats of sealer to protect the new surface from stains and general wear and tear.

Can applying a broom finish be done as a DIY project?

It’s possible to apply a broom finish yourself, but we highly recommend talking with an experienced contractor such as SUNDEK of San Antonio.

We are familiar with the common hurdles that are encountered when completing these types of projects. Since we’re local, we’re also familiar with what weather conditions are best (and worst) to do this type of construction work in, as temperature and humidity can affect the outcome of your project.

While a broom finish provides a sleek, simple texture, achieving it is more difficult than it seems. Consistency is key when moving the broom across the surface so you end up with a pattern that looks professional, and not sloppy.
