The Aloft brand of hotels, owned by Marriott International, are known for their modern style. So for their pool areas, this boutique brand needed more than just a typical deck. Wanting something chic and eye-catching, Marriott hired SUNDEK to install pool deck coatings at multiple locations. The first of the Aloft pool decks was installed by SUNDEK of San Antonio, for an Aloft hotel located just over a mile from University of Texas at San Antonio.
For a pool deck at a hotel, SUNDEK’s Classic Texture is the ideal material. It’s durable, so it’ll last for years despite the massive amount of foot traffic it’ll experience. The texture of this product makes the surface slip resistant which is perfect at a spot that gets guests of all ages. Even during hot summer months, a pool deck surfaced with Classic Texture will remain comfortable to walk on, thanks to its varying degrees of texture. Additionally, the non-porous acrylic finish of Classic Texture serves to prevent damage from contaminants such as sunscreen oils, chlorine, dirt, and more.
The general contractor on the project provided an overview of the design plan: Aloft wanted a sunburst with rays of alternating colors. Before beginning their work, SUNDEK of San Antonio needed to create a detailed, scaled version of the plan. Because the sunburst would originate in one section and then radiate out to the perimeter of the 3,500-square-foot pool deck, it was critical to get accurate measurements and a specific plan mapped out before beginning the coloring process.
After creating the detailed plan and getting the design approved, SUNDEK crews got started. “We can do the texture part in our sleep,” says Craig Roohan, general manager for SUNDEK of San Antonio. “But the vastness of the multicolor design made this job more challenging than some others.” After putting down the base coat of SUNDEK Acrylic Finish Coat in Tweed Gray, Roohan explains that the crews needed to wait for that to completely dry before they could put masking paper and tape down to prepare for applying the alternating colors of the rays: Varsity Blues, Vapor Trails, and Ravishing Red (all in the Acrylic Finish Coat).
In addition to needing to be very precise when it came to plotting out the straight lines of each ray after the base coat had dried, there was a physical barrier on the project: a fence around the pool deck that the crew had to work around. “We had to start the rays on one side of the fence and run them through the fence to the other side of the pool,” recalls Roohan.
Thanks to their comprehensive design plan and meticulous attention to detail, SUNDEK of San Antonio crews were able to complete the project on schedule, and the client was thrilled with the result. Not only is the deck safe and comfortable to walk on—it provides a bright, clean, and modern aesthetic for guests to enjoy during their stay.
